GM Vugar Gashimov Wins Capelle la Grande

Azerbaijani Grandmaster wons the Renowned Open

The twentieth edition of Capelle la Grande took place with more than 600 players including 70+ GMs and 240 titled players. Eight players shared the first place: GM Arutinian, GM Fedorchuk, GM Kryvoruchko, GM Chernyshov, IM Deviatkin, GM Kotronias, and GM L’Ami and GM Vugar Gashimov who had the best tiebreak and the winner of the one of the most famous open tournaments in Europe.

2008 European Festival of Chess Composition in Turkey

2008 European Festival of Chess Composition is going to be held between March 28(arrival) - April 3 (departure) in Antalya, Turkey. The venue is going to be Limra Hotel in Kemer. The festival will include 4th European Chess Solving Championship(ESCS), open solving competitions and other events which you can find about more at the invitation below.

Gibraltar Chess Festival Won by Nakamura

6th Gibtelecom Chess Festival, one of the most important open tournaments in the world, at the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets with the Mediterranean took place between January 22-30 at Caleta Hotel, in Gibraltar. Many strong players including GM Yue Wang , GM Bu Xiangzhi, GM Ni Hua, GM Wang Hao , the Chinese squad, GM Viktor Bologan, GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Kiril Georgiev were participating. The winner was determined by the play-off between GM Xiangzhi Bu and GM Hikaru Nakamura who shared the first place with 8 points out of 10 and the winner was the American GM Hikaru Nakamura.

There are many players from the Mediterranean region, including GM Alexander Beliavsky from Slovenia, top Turkish GM Mikhail Gurevich, GM Hristos Banikas from Greece, GM Juan Manuel Bellon Lopez from Spain, reigning champion of Greece IM Ioannis Papadopoulos and Slovenian star of women's chess IM Anna Muzychuk also played in the event.

Agreement Between Global Chess BV and Turkish Chess Federation

Following the contractual assignment of relaunching the FIDE website by the Executive board in November, the CEO of Global Chess BV Geoffrey Borg and President of Turkish Chess Federation Ali Nihat Yazici signed an agreement for cooperating on developing new web technologies, improving the design and the content of the FIDE web site. The agreement was signed at the Ataturk Centre, TCF headquarter in Ankara,Turkey on January 10, 2008.
 
Three Mediterranean Players in Corus Wijk aan Zee

caruana25a.jpgCorus Chess Tournament, the first elite event in the year 2008 is being held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands between 11-28 January 2008. There are GM A, B and C groups which are the major focus of attraction and many other closed and open categories held at the tournament hold named de Moriaan.

B Group was won by Sergei Movsesian with 9.5 out of 13 and  Etienne Bacrot from France shared the 2-3.places with Nigel Short after scoring 8.5 points. Fabiano Caruana won the C group with 10 points out of 13 and qualified for the B group next year.

Legendary Serbian Grandmaster Ljubomir Ljubojevic, who is often delivering colorful commentaries in press rooms is won the Honorary Group, leading the field of strong veterans Viktor Kortchnoi, Lajos Portisch and Jan Timman with 4/6.
