6th Mediterrenean Chess Championships in Antalya, Turkey

The 6th Mediterranean Men and Women Chess Championships will be held in Antalya Kemer, Turkey from Saturday 10th January 2009 (arrival) to Sunday 18th January 2009 (departure). The Mediterranean Championships are going to be held in Antalya, Turkey. Please find the details in the regulations attached below.

GM Sveshnikov Wins 25th Bled Chess Festival

25.Chess Festival which was held in Bled, Slovenia from 23 February to 1 March. Bled is not only a touristic city in Slovenia but also a renowned chess city due to the fact that it hosted 1961 Interzonal and 2002 Chess Olympiads. Open A group was won by the Latvian GM Evgeny Sveshnikov with 7 points out of 9. 2-5.places wre shared by IM Šebenik, GM Lenič, GM Drasko and GM Tratar with 6.5 points.

Anand Victorious in Morelia/Linares 2008

One of the most prestigious events of the professional chess circuit was completed Andulusian town Linares in Spain, which is the second part of the event named as Linares/Morelia Super Chess Tournament.

Vishwanathan Anand drew his last round game against Topalov and won Linares/Morelia for the second time consecutively. Norwegian youngster Magnus Carlsen pressed against Teimur Radjabov the catch the world champion but he did not suceed but shined in the most prestigious professional event in the world with 8 points and sole second place. Winner of Corus 2008 Levon Aronian and Veselin Topalov shared 3-4.places with 7.5 points. You can find the cross table and the results of the recent rounds at the link below. Atatürk Women Masters Chess : A New Supertournament for Women

Elite of Women Chess Meeting at the Highest Place in İstanbul

 


Turkey is hosting a new super tournament for women players with  the sponsorship of Türkiye İş Bankası with the name of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic. The dates of the event is 10-20 March 2008 and 8 invited players  with 2 top Turkish women players are going to play. The venue is the 41st floor of Türkiye İş Bankası towers, the highest building in Turkey which is located in one of the central commercial areas of İstanbul.

Fontaine: "Players have to get used to it."

 

Europe Echecs is a monthly chess magazine covering the chess events at national and international level founded back in 1959 by Raoul Bertolo. The second chairman of the magazine was Jean-Claude Fasquelle, the chairman and magazine editor of Editions Grasset. Chess Europe after Fasquelle extended its coverage beyond the national level and it became one of the most famous chess periodical in the world. This is the summary of the history of the magazine that is presented in French.

The publishing director of Europe Echecs is grandmaster Bachar Kouatly and the magazine has a very good web site with a good video coverage at various strong tournaments. MCA and TCF Press Officer and chess columnist of Sabah newspaper  Özgür Akman made an interview with the new journalist of Europe Echecs GM Robert Fontaine on the Aeroflot event, future of world chess and the relationship between chess, chess players and the media.

14th Corria del Rio Chess Championship won by GM Mirzoev
Fourteenth edition of Corria del Rio Chess Championship was won by Azerbaijani GM GM Azer Mirzoev with 7 points out of 9 sharing the first place with IM Teran Alvarez and GM Almeida Quintana but better on tiebreaks. Six previous editions were won by GM Korneev.
