Yet Another Young Champion: Greek Championships

The Greek Championships for Men and Women took place in Igoumenitsa,Thesprotia (coastal city in northwestern Greece) from 1st to 9th of December. The tournaments were held in round robin format with 10 players. In men's section produced a sensational result with the youngster Ioannis Papadopoulos (19) won the event ahead of a field including the experienced grandmasters with 7.5/9. GM Hristos Banikas was second with 5.5 points while the top seed of the event GM Vasilios Kotronias gathered 5 points as Georgaidis and GM Athanasios Mastrovasilis did.

In women's section things went much more expetected and WIM Marina Makropolou won the national title with 6.5 points followed by WIM Ektarerini Fakhridiou with 6 points. The third place was shared by Maria Manelidou and WIM Vera Papadopolou. You can find the results below.

World Junior Champion GM Ahmed Adly wins the Egyptian Championship

GM Ahmed Adly who won the World Junior title (Under 20) added another victory to the year 2007 by winning the Egyptian Championship in . GM Adly was only added to the event in the final minute since he was invited to the World Cup 2007 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia which was clashing with the national championship. Adly entered the event only after his elimination against the current finalist of the World Cup 2007, GM Gata Kamsky.

Italian Chess Prodigy Shone At National Championship
GM Fabio Caruana wins 67th Italian Championship

15-year-old GM Fabiano Caruana(2594) won the 67th Italian Championship held between November 23- December 4 in Martina Franca. The Italian youngster won the event with 9.5 points. IM Sabino Brunello(2489) and GM Carlos Garcia Palermo(2439) shared the second place with 6.5 points.

New Champions: Doric and Drljevic

International Master Darko Doric from Croatia is the 5th Mediterranean Men Champion and WIM Lilja Drljevic from Montenegro is the 5th Women Champion. Up until the last round everything was wide open in both categories and whilst the main contender's for the men's title held each other up with draws, IM Doric was the only player who forced through a win to clinch the overall title. WIM Drljevic won her game against the top Tunisian player in the tournament to pass WGM Sophie Milliet and IM Ekaterina Atalik who lost their last round games.

In the eighth round, Krivokapic and IM Doric drew but they are sharing the first place with GM Atalık who won against IM Esen, FM Adnani and IM Estremera. FM Adnani is going to play against GM Atalık in the final round while the game between IM Estremera and Krivokapic might also produce a brand new champion since both players also have six points.

 
In women's championship, WGM Sedina lost against IM Marzolo and disposed of the first place. IM Atalık and WGM Milliet made a draw in their individual encounter which means they are the leaders before the final round. The women's champion is going to be determined after the final round pairings in which WGM Milliet is going to face IM Doric while IM Atalık is playing with IM Marzolo in the final round. While, WGM Sedina who has 5 points is going to play Chahrani and WIM Drljevic Njili.

Three way tie after Round Seven

In the seventh  round, IM Esen and IM Doric drew their games and leading with 5.5 points. Krivokapic who won against IM Marzolo has also 5.5 points and  is playing with IM Doric.There is a Turkish derby at the second board between GM Suat Atalık and IM Barış Esen are playing on the second board.

In women's contest, WGM Sedina drew with Nijli and has 5 points as WGM Milliet and IM Atalik have also 5 points. A crucial encounter for the women's championship is the one between Milliet and Atalik in the penultimate round.
