Spain is one of the most active chess countries in the world with many tournaments at different levels.
The first news from Spain is the 7th Festival Internacional de Ajedrez GEMA which was held from 26th December 2007 to January 5th in Mondariz Balneario (Pontevedra), Spain. The festival had a closed event, a 10th category round robin won by Australian IM Zhao Zong-Yuan earning a GM norm at the same time.
33.Abierta International "Ciudad de Sevilla", another open tournament is held in Sevilla Spain, between 5-12 January. Armenian Grandmaster Karen Movsziszian won the event with 7.5 points out of 9.

Georgian star IM Ana Matnadze (2390) won the 4th category tournament with 6.5 points out of 9 games. Romanian Raul Schmidt (2145) and Spaniard Manuel Outerelo Ucha (2181) took first two places at the Under 2250 Open and earned invitation for the 2008 Cerrado IM.
