Three Mediterranean Players in Corus Wijk aan Zee |
 Corus Chess Tournament, the first elite event in the year 2008 is being held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands between 11-28 January 2008. There are GM A, B and C groups which are the major focus of attraction and many other closed and open categories held at the tournament hold named de Moriaan.
B Group was won by Sergei Movsesian with 9.5 out of 13 and Etienne Bacrot from France shared the 2-3.places with Nigel Short after scoring 8.5 points. Fabiano Caruana won the C group with 10 points out of 13 and qualified for the B group next year.
Legendary Serbian Grandmaster Ljubomir Ljubojevic, who is often delivering colorful commentaries in press rooms is won the Honorary Group, leading the field of strong veterans Viktor Kortchnoi, Lajos Portisch and Jan Timman with 4/6.
In GM A Group, the strong field including World Champion Anand, ex-champions Kramnik and Topalov are playing among with the ones like Ivanchuk, ACP Rapid Cup winner Radjabov, Mamedyarov, Carlsen and a very strong field. There is not any player from the Mediterranean region in A group but in Corus GM B Group, French grandmaster Etienne Bacrot is playing. In C Group top seed is none other than the Italian champion youngster, GM Fabiano Caruana (2594). Experienced Greek GM Efstratios Grivas, an active writer recently is also playing in this group C.
In the first round GM Bacrot won against the super talent of China, WGM Hou Yifan. GM Caruana won against GM Peng while GM Grivas lost against IM van der Werf.
